The Vocaloid Mapping Contest (VMC) returns with two new Featured Artists, an ambitious new format, and special prizes.
The Vocaloid Mapping Contest (VMC) returns with two new Featured Artists, an ambitious new format, and special prizes.
You mission remains the same: create the best VOCALOID map possible using one of the provided songs. However, you must work as a team of two (2) to accomplish this. This contest is open to all osu!, osu!taiko, osu!catch, and osu!mania mappers! Our dedicated judging panels for each game mode are looking forward to seeing your work.
There are two phases to this event: Phase 1 and Phase 2. Phase 1 is composed both both the PARALLEL Round (Round 1) and the SWAP Round (Round 2).
Find a partner and complete the signup form anytime prior to submitting your PARALLEL round maps.
One mapper will select and map a song from MARETU, and the other will select and map a song from mimizu.
Teams will submit two (2) maps prior to this round's deadline, one on each song they selected.
A short screening phase will occur after this round's deadline. Teams will be notified if they are eliminated by osu! private message or via Discord.
Mappers that are not screened out will now be tasked with remapping the song their partner had mapped in the previous round.
For example, if Mapper A mapped Song #1 in the last round, Mapper B will now map Song #1. Mapper A will map Song #2, which Mapper B had previously mapped in the PARALLEL round.
Just like in the previous round, all teams will submit two (2) completely new maps.
If you're confident you won't be screened out after the PARALLEL round, there's nothing stopping you from starting the mapping for this phase early.
Whats the twist? The songs must show a different interpretation. Overly similar maps will be heavily penalized in the judging phase.
The top 6 teams from the SWAP Round qualify to participate in this final phase.
Both mappers will collaborate directly to create one cohesive mapset for the chosen song. Each difficulty must be collaborative.
The results will be streamed LIVE on the Vocaloid Appreciation Team Twitch account with commentary.
More precise details regarding the stream schedule will be announced in the VAT Discord server and updated on this news post, once they are finalised. A video of the stream will be made available afterward for those who can't make it!
Any changes to this schedule will be announced in the VAT Discord server. One member of each team is required to join the server to be notified of important changes.
Teams that continue to the SWAP round will be notified in the VAT Discord Server. Teams that are screened out will be messaged privately by a contest host.
This contest is created by and for vocal synth fans to promote music, artists, and mappers. All mappers who participate will receive constructive feedback from experienced mappers in the community. That's arguably a more valuable prize in its own right!
Submissions must use songs from MARETU's Featured Artist listing and mimizu's Featured Artist listing. Cut versions are not allowed.
Teams must submit a team roster anytime prior to submitting Round 1 entries. Only teams of two are allowed to participate. Mappers may not participate solo. Teams may not be changed after roster submissions.
Submissions must be in .osz format.
Beatmaps must follow the ranking criteria. Minor mistakes (like an off-screen object) can be forgiven, but intentional unrankable elements will result in disqualification.
Maps must remain anonymous until after the results are announced. Metadata will be anonymized before judging.
No storyboards or videos are to be included in submissions.
No manual .osu file edits beyond what is possible in the editor.
Each .osz submission must include all required difficulties and songs for that round. Be sure to follow the instructions on the submission page to avoid issues!
Collaborative difficulties should feature approximately equal contribution between both mappers.
All aspects of each submission must be created solely be a member of the team. As such, artificial intelligence (AI) is not permitted.
The judging process is split between Phase 1 (PARALLEL & SWAP Rounds) and Phase 2 (DUET Rounds). Each phase includes its own unique primary category, while all other criteria apply equally to both.
In Phase 1, each map for Song A is scored individually in Relevance, Creativity, Expertise, and Overall Impression. The scores in each criteria are added. Then, these two maps are put side to side a 'Uniqueness' score is added. This is worth 25% of the raw score. This process repeats for Song B. Song B's averaged criteria scores are then averaged with Song A's, which are then standardized to determine the final placements.
To participate, a team of two (2) mappers must be formed. There is no restriction on who you can have on your team, with limited exceptions:
No mappers may be restricted or contest/tournament banned.
Mappers cannot participate on more than one team.
Mappers may not be a judge, screener, or other staff for the contest.
One member of the team will need to be the captain. This should be decided prior to signup.
One member of each team, at minimum, is required to join the VAT Discord server in order to receive important contest updates.

The Vocaloid Appreciation Team, or VAT, is a community-driven group dedicated to celebrating and promoting vocaloid music within the osu! ecosystem. Its primary mission is to spotlight exceptional vocaloid producers and their music by working directly with Featured Artists and organizing events that encourage creators to engage with vocaloid content.
The VAT plays a central role in projects like the Vocaloid Mapping Contest (VMC), where mappers are challenged to create unique and innovative beatmaps using songs that haven't seen the popularity they deserve. By curating contests and events, VAT helps connect talented musicians with osu! players and creators, fostering creativity and collaboration across the rhythm-gaming community.
